Oregon Battle of the Books 2024-2025

Reynolds School District

OBOB Volunteer Coaches Do you love reading? Do you like talking about books with kids? Oregon Battle of the Books (OBOB) is a reading and trivia competition in which students in grades 3-8 across the state read books from a predetermined list and “battle” against teams using trivia questions about the books. OBOB encourages kids to not only read books, but to read books from a variety of different genres and authors. By participating on an OBOB team, students will read books they may not have previously been inclined to try. This is one of the goals of OBOB. Another goal is to add an element of camaraderie and teamwork to a traditionally solitary activity. Kids who enjoy reading are able to meet like-minded friends, collaborate, and compete together. As a volunteer coach, you will: · Plan and facilitate team meetings and practices where students talk about their books. · Help teams prepare for battles by practicing trivia questions together. · Training and resources will be provided. Timeline · September – December – students start reading books and forming teams · January – March – practice for battles and compete in school-based battles to determine the team that will represent the school at OBOB regionals (if the school aims to participate at the state level) · March 2025 – Regional OBOB competition (date and location TDB) · April 26, 2025 – Reynolds Elementary OBOB event at Wilkes Elementary Volunteer Commitment Ideally, each team will meet with their coach for 30-45 minutes each week. Meetings times to be determined. For more information about Oregon Battle of the Books, please visit their website at Official OBOB Website: www.oregonbattleofthebooks.org

When signing up you will choose from a list of Reynolds School District schools that are requesting volunteers. This will be your school for the entire time.
